Death notices for Bonita Smith and Walter Ruark


Bonita Lavonne Conklin was born to Leonard John Conklin and Blanch Rose Pechacek in Mower Co., Minn., on April 3, 1935. The third of five living children, she died on August 20, 2008.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard Smith; daughter Sheri Lee Hilton, Indianapolis; son Kim Dane Smith, Crescent City, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister in Minnesota, a brother and sister in Ridgefield, and a sister near Wapato.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Husum Fire Department.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the Husum Fire Department.


Walter E. Ruark was born June 2, 1937, in White Salmon. He died July 19, 2008, in Portland, Ore., from cancer.

Mr. Ruark attended Columbia High School in White Salmon. He was in the Navy for four years and lived in the Portland area for about 36 years. He was a retired mechanic.

Mr. Ruark is survived by his sister Sandra Heinz and his children Sherry Carcamo, Tammy Lilly, and James Ruark; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Burrell and father Keith Ruark.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver.
