Columbia scores big win in 'River Clash' finale

Seniors Lacey Kruse and Michelle McMillen combined for 38 points last Saturday to lead Columbia High past Central Linn (Ore.), 65-38, in a girls consolation game of the Columbia River Clash in Umatilla, Ore.

Kruse scored a game-high 25 points and McMillen had 13 for the Bruins (3-2), who broke the game open in the second quarter by outscoring the young Cobras from Halsey, 15-4.

Kruse finished the first half with 17 points and McMillen added nine to help Columbia build a 37-22 halftime advantage.

Oregon's defending Class 3A champions overtook the Bruins in the fourth quarter last Friday to win the second-round game.

The Columbians, who had their 31-game winning streak snapped by a loss in the tournament's opening round, outscored the Bruins, 10-4, in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

Columbia, which led 15-6 after one quarter and 20-18 at halftime, entered the final quarter with a 30-28 lead.

Lacey Kruse paced the Bruins with 14 points, and Rachel Connolly and Laurel Huth each chipped in six points.

The Mustangs, in overcoming a one-point halftime deficit, outscored the Bruins 21-12 in the second half of their tournament opener last Thursday.

Columbia held a 16-15 edge at the intermission but managed just five points in the third quarter, falling behind 26-21.

Lacey Kruse scored a game-high 12 points for the Bruins, who suffered their first loss of the season.
