Prep Girls Basektball Roundup

Lyle/Wishram loses second-straight tourney final

For the second consecutive weekend, Lyle/Wishram's girls basketball team advanced to a tournament final.

And, for the second Saturday in a row, the Cougars lost the championship game--this time to host North Lake of Silver Lake, Ore., 47-26.

Lyle/Wishram (3-2) kept the game close in the first half, scoring the first six points and holding North Lake scoreless until midway through the opening quarter.

That basket jump-started the Cowgirls' offense, which added 13 more points for a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

North Lake gradually widened its lead to 23-15 by halftime and 35-23 after three quarters.

"Having no shot clock, they were able to hold the ball and make us come out and match up with them," Cougars Coach Chris Barthlow noted, "and they pushed it inside a lot easier than they did the previous three quarters. We finally tired out in the fourth and they put the game away."

Spino finished with 11 points, five assists and three steals, Zoe Lindner had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Samantha Brewer tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and three steals. Lara Parsons added a game-high 14 rebounds.

"This was a game we should have pulled away in early," Vandals Coach Jim Reed noted. Instead, "we had to battle back in the fourth quarter for the win."

Klickitat (2-3) fell behind, 40-38, with 1:24 remaining. But Parsons converted two free throws to tie the game, and the Vandals clinched the victory by outscoring the Cougars 5-2.

In the second half, Lyle/Wishram led by as many as 18 points (29-11 at the end of three quarters) on the way to its third victory.

Teaera Churchwell's six points led the Cougars, who got eight rebounds and four steals from Lexi Becker.

North Lake (Ore.) 62, Klickitat 41:

The host Cowgirls outscored the Vandals in every quarter but the third en route to the opening-round win last Friday.

North Lake led 18-5 after one quarter, 31-16 at the half and 40-27 through three quarters of play.

"We played catch-up the whole game," noted Vandals Coach Jim Reed. "We would cut the lead to 10, then they would surge again. It was a great effort, especially in the second half, but we had too many turnovers (25) for us to stay with such a balanced team."

Samantha Brewer led Klickitat with 24 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, Zoe Lindner had 11 points and three steals, and Tia Spino tallied seven assists and six points.

""We went into the half up 12-10, came out in the third quarter and our offense started to get in a groove," Cougars Coach Chris Barthlow said. "We were able to move the ball around and really work our offense."
