Lyle/Wishram holds off Yakama Tribal; Klickitat loses to TCP on last-second shot

Mike Murphy totaled 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots Monday, leading Lyle/Wishram to a 57-50 non-league victory over Yakama Tribal School in Toppenish.

Mike Eiesland added 14 points and eight rebounds, Adam Snyder scored 14 points and Ty Freemantle chipped in six assists and four steals for the Cougars, who won for the 10th time in 17 starts.

Lyle/Wishram trailed, 14-10, after one quarter but surged ahead in the second by outscoring Tribal, 14-8. By the end of three quarters the Cougars held a nine-point advantage, 38-31.

Tribal cut into that lead in the fourth quarter, but just barely as Lyle/Wishram nearly matched its host point-for-point during the last eight minutes of play.

The Cougars close out the regular season this weekend with Greater Columbia B League 2B Division games at La Salle (Friday) and Riverside Christian (Saturday), in preparation for a Feb. 16 district playoff against La Salle.

Michael McConville sank 5-of-7 3-point tries and scored a game-high 21 points in the Vandals' victory over the Eagle Mustangs last Friday.

Klickitat stormed into the lead at the outset and closed out the first quarter of play with a 22-9 lead. Its advantage at halftime was 30-18.

TLG tightened the game up in the third quarter, though, by outscoring the visiting team, 15-10. But Klickitat, which only had five turnovers in the game, held TLG off in the fourth quarter, winning the final period, 10-9.

Herschel Sanchey netted 14 points to aid the Klickitat cause and Jeromie Mason put together a stat line of six points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals.

For TLG, Dannon Kavanagh and Bradley Woodruff each scored 10 points, and Kris Wood added nine.

Other standouts for TLG included Devin Dean with six rebounds and six assists and Kristian Rubesh with eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Joe Campbell added six points for the Cougars and Mike Eiesland chipped in with three points and five rebounds.

At Tri-Cities Prep 62, Klickitat 60:

Ryan Mercado scored from just inside the 3-point line at the buzzer last Wednesday to lift the host Jaguars to the non-league win over the Vandals.

It was a surprise ending to a game that was tied, 31-31, at halftime and that Klickitat led by seven points with under 3 minutes remaining in regulation.

Jeremy Moss scored 18 points and made 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range to lead the Vandals, who got 14 points and eight rebounds from Levi Sanchey and 12 points from Herschel Sanchey, and shot 20 for 32 from the field and 12 for 19 from the foul line.

At Sunnyside Christian 56, Trout Lake/Glenwood 28:

The Eagle Mustangs fell behind, 30-9, by halftime of their Jan. 24 GCB 1B Division game and couldn't catch up.

Donnon Kavanagh scored eight points and Alex Whitefield had seven for the Eagle Mustangs, whose best quarter was the third, when they scored 10 points.
