It's a book signing, music event

Portland author in town for First Friday

Waucoma Bookstore & Nora's Fish House will be hosting Portland author and musician Willy Vlautin for a book signing on Friday, June 6, at 5 p.m. at Waucoma Bookstore.

After the book signing, Vlautin will be playing music at Nora's Fish House at 8:15 p.m.

Vlautin is lead singer and main songwriter of the alternative country band Richmond Fontaine. Vlautin will be signing his new book "Northline."

"Northline" includes a limited edition CD soundtrack scored and performed by Vlautin and Paul Brainard. Vlautin composed the music as he worked on revisions of "Northline."

"Northline" is about Allison Johnson who escapes from Las Vegas and her abusive boyfriend by moving to Reno. Allison is intent on creating a new life, but is haunted by her past mistakes and lacks the ability to believe in herself. The only thing that keeps her going are the imaginary conversations she has with Paul Newman and the characters he played. As Alison's life moves on, small acts of kindness reveal themselves to her, and slowly the chance of a new life begins to emerge.

"Northline" is full of memorable characters and imbued with a beautiful sense of yearning.

In 2007, Vlautin's acclaimed debut novel "The Motel Life" was voted one of the Top Ten Books of the Northwest by the Oregonian, was chosen as one of the Top 25 Books of 2007 by The Washington Post, won Nevada's Silver Pen award and was an Editor's Choice for the New York Times Book Review.
