L/W boys, TLG girls claim 2008 GCB championships

The Lyle/Wishram boys track and field team, led by Mike Murphy's victories in the discus and the shot put, scored a 15-point victory over Riverside Christian's boys to win the 2008 Greater Columbia B League championship last Friday in Glenwood.

Murphy, a junior in his first year of high school track competition, recorded a personal best in the shot put, throwing 44 feet, 11 inches, or 1 foot, 4 inches farther than he'd thrown before. His mark of 140-2 in the discus gave him a nearly 5-foot victory over Eric Hess of Bickleton.

His first-place efforts were among three posted by Lyle/Wishram, which also won the 4x400-meter relay and finished with a meet-high 170.5 points.

Other multiple-event winners included Klickitat senior Herschel Sanchey, who tripled in the 800-,

1600- and 3200-runs, and Aaron Wells of Riverside Christian. Wells finished first in the javelin, long jump and triple jump. Riverside's Dana Wells swept to victory just ahead of Lyle/Wishram freshman Henry Matai in two events: the 110 and 300 hurdles, with a meet record time in the latter.

The top highlights for Trout Lake/Glenwood, which placed third with 92 points, included Kristian Rubesh's personal record in the pole vault--he cleared 13 feet, 3 inches to win the event and extend his PR by 9 inches--and PRs by Luke Larson in the pole vault and Mikael Dick in the 400.

Larson was runner-up to Rubesh in the pole vault, despite reaching a new height of 12-6 and Dick ran to victory in the race in 51.83 seconds, in a 1-second victory over Lyle's Robert Phelps.

On the girls side of the championships, Trout Lake/Glenwood prevailed with 168 points. La Salle ranked second with 145.33 points and Riverside was third with 126.33.

Junior Neola Putnam and senior Dave'y Lumley led the TLG girls. Putnam posted victories in the 400, 800 and 1600 runs, and Lumley won two of the three throws.

Putnam's victory in the 400--which came in a PR time of 1:01.27--was a narrow one. She had to hold off La Salle's Megan Bonny at the finish line to capture a .41-second win. Teaera Churchwell of Lyle/Wishram ran a close third.

Other highlights for TLG included freshman Liz Vogt's personal-record time in the 200. Vogt placed third in the neck-and-neck race--she lost by .17 seconds--in a time of 26.98 seconds.

Coming Up:

Greater Columbia B League competitors will assemble once again tomorrow for the Yakima Valley District championships, set to start at 3:30 p.m. in Zaepfel Stadium, at Yakima's Eisenhower High School.
