Class 1a Track &Amp; Field

Columbia High qualifies 10 for state meet in Tacoma

An even dozen Columbia High athletes will be leaving today for Tacoma, where the WIAA's 2008 Class 1A track and field championships will be held tomorrow and Saturday.

Senior Jarin Ladiges and junior Whitney Reynier each will be competing in three events for the Bruins: Ladiges in the boys 100-meter dash and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays; Reynier in the girls 400, long jump and 4x400 relay.

Reynier had a sensational Southwest District meet last Friday in Stevenson, winning the long jump with a personal-record mark of 16 feet, 5.5 inches. Her previous best effort in the event was 15-6.

She also turned in a PR performance in the 400, completing the one-lap sprint in 1 minute, 2.76 seconds, for an improvement of 1.11 seconds.

At the end of the day, Reynier ran a leg for CHS's 4x400 relay, which placed third in a season-best time (by 8 seconds) of 4:22.8--or just 1 second behind the winning entry from Stevenson.

"The girls 4x4, timewise, was very close to taking first place," noted Bruins Coach Doug Miller. "They led the race until the end of the last lap."

The CHS boys team's 4x100 and 4x400 relays of Ladiges, juniors Luis Roque and Enrique Granados, and freshman Evan Nystrom qualified for state with runner-up finishes to Kalama in the 4x1 and to Onalaska in the 4x4.

"All three relay teams we entered are going to state," Miller said. "Three for three is a nice average, and I felt they all had a shot to go as they're quite competitive."

In open events, senior Calvin Garrett punched a return ticket to the state 1A boys meet with a third-place showing in the high jump. Junior Tate Peterson qualified for his first meet by finishing third in the triple jump.

Missing out on a trip to state by one place was sophomore Zachary Mart, who took fifth in the long jump with a PR vault of 20-3.25.

Columbia's other highlights were Nystrom's personal record in the long jump (19-5.25, 7th place) and sophomore Jenson Ladiges' PR in the 300 hurdles (46.78 seconds, 7th).
