On Aug. 27 and 28, the Klickitat County Sheriff's Office led a joint effort in marijuana eradication at two locations in Klickitat County.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Washington State Patrol provided personnel and equipment which greatly assisted in the operation.
On Aug. 27, an outdoor marijuana grow was eradicated on range land about 10 miles east of Goldendale. Two suspects were apprehended without incident at the grow site, though they were armed at the time. Approximately 5,000 mature marijuana plants were eradicated following the suspects' arrest.
On Aug. 28, an outdoor marijuana grow was eradicated on public land eight miles north of White Salmon. Two suspects were apprehended in that grow as well. They were also armed at the time. One suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended with the help of a police canine. Approximately 15,000 mature marijuana plants were eradicated following the suspects' arrest.
All four suspects were initially housed at the Klickitat County Jail. Two remain in KCSO custody and two have been transferred into federal custody.
Two people suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident on Aug. 27, 2008, at approximately 4:59 p.m. The accident occurred on State Route 97 at milepost 2.8.
According to the report, a 1997 Peterbuilt with a single trailer driven by J. Refugio Ramirez, 53, Hermiston, Ore., was traveling northbound on SR 97 followed by a 2007 Peterbuilt with single trailer driven by Diane M. Vanderziel, 41, Pahrump, Nev. Vanderziel was making a legal pass in the passing lane around Ramirez's rig. Ramirez attempted to make a left-hand turn from his lane, striking the Vanderziel semi and causing both vehilces to block the two northbound lanes. Both lanes were blocked for about one hour.
Ramirez suffered a lcaeration to his left index finger and was not transported. Vanderziel had soreness and was transported for signs of shock.
Ramirez was cited for negligent driving.
