Lyle/Wishram earns first 2B league win; Klickitat, TLG qualify for 1B district tourney

Lyle/Wishram earned its first Mid-Valley 2B League victory last Saturday, avenging a one-point overtime loss to Riverside Christian in Yakima with a 49-41 victory in Lyle.

The Cougars (1-3, 14-4) led the Crusaders (1-2, 8-6) at every break in the action, including 18-15 at halftime and 35-26 after three quarters.

"It was a good win for us, and we needed to get into the win column," Cougars Asst. Coach Chris Cochenour noted.

Mike Murphy scored 17 points and had nine rebounds and five blocked shots to lead Lyle/Wishram. Adam Snyder added 12 points and got the assist of five Cougars baskets.

"It was an intense game throughout but, overall, our defense played well and our height allowed us to out-rebound them, 29-17," said Cochenour.

Alan and Henry Matai, he noted, were active in disrupting Riverside's offense, while Mike Eiesland contributed all over with seven rebounds, six points and three assists.

Last Friday, the Vandals snapped a three-game losing streak and clinched the Greater Columbia 1B League's No. 2 seed in district with the rout of the Pirates.

Klickitat (6-2, 11-8) used pressure defense in the first half to subdue Bickleton (0-8, 7-11) and build a 32-8 halftime bulge.

"We controlled the tempo of the game and, even though we didn't shoot all that well, we were able to create 73 shots from the field and 14 from the foul line, compared to 39 shots from the field and six from the line for Bickleton," Vandals Coach Joe Bales noted. "We can't hardly lose with stats like that."

Michael McConville led Klickitat in scoring with 20 points and also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Ron Prominski and Jeromie Mason also had strong all-around games for the Vandals, combining for 20 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals.

At White Swan 69, Lyle/Wishram 64 (OT):

Last Friday, the host Cougars made a layin at the buzzer to send the Mid-Valley 2B League game to overtime, then won it in OT by outscoring the visiting Cougars, 7-2.

"That's the second time something like that has happened to us in a league game," L/W assistant coach Chris Cochenour said. (The Cougars lost to Riverside in overtime last month after surrendering a tying goal with time running out in the fourth quarter.)

Lyle/Wishram led White Swan, 62-60, with seven seconds remaining after Alan Matai, who finished with a season-high 14 points and five steals, stole the ball and scored on a breakaway.

But seven seconds proved more than enough time for White Swan to go end-to-end for the equalizer.

Noted Cochenour: "If this game is any indication, Saturday's rematch with White Swan (in Lyle) should be a good one."
