Pair of victories pushes TLG to top of GCB leader board

Liz Vogt, Katie Yarnell and Amy Keithly combined for 40 points last Saturday to lead Trout Lake/Glenwood to its second victory on the opening weekend of Greater Columbia 1B League play.

Vogt scored 17, Yarnell had 12 and Keithly tallied 11 for the Eagle Mustangs, who defeated Bickleton, 46-35, in Glenwood.

TLG (7-1 overall) led 10-8 after one quarter but Bickleton (0-2, 6-2) rallied in the second to tie the game at 18-all going in to halftime.

The Eagle Mustangs took control of the contest in the third quarter, however, slapping a press on the Pirates that they had difficulty maneuvering through.

By the time the quarter ended, TLG held a 34-23 lead--an advantage they protected by matching Bickleton, point for point, in the final eight minutes of action.

Klickitat 56, at Yakama Tribal 25:

In Toppenish last Saturdya, the Vandals bounced back from an opening-night defeat to rout the host Eagles.

Klickitat held Tribal to eight points or less in each of the first three quarters while mounting leads of 15-2, 25-10 and 37-14.

"We used a full-court press in the opening quarter to set the tempo," noted Vandals Coach Jim Reed. "We pulled the press at the start of the second quarter and played all 11 players in the last three quarters. It made for some interesting lineups on the court at times."

Samantha Brewer's 20 points led all scorers and Kali Fargher added 15 points (5/6 free throws) and five steals for the Vandals, who got solid all-around games from Zoe Lindner and Tia Spino.

Lindner totaled six points, six steals and seven rebounds, and Spino put together a stat line of seven points, six assists, five steals and five rebounds.

Lyle/Wishram 38, at Yakama Tribal 22:

The Cougars played strong defense and out-rebounded the host Eagles, 63-29, to win the non-league game in Toppenish last Friday.

Cougars Coach Chris Barthlow said both teams had an off-night shooting the ball but, on the whole, Lyle/Wishram's "girls played a great game."

"We had some different girls step and have big games for us," he noted. And, "before the game, we gave the girls a goal to out-rebound Tribal by 20 for the game, and some of the girls took that to heart."

Jennifer Benash had her best game so far for the Cougars, coming off the bench to supply eight points, two steals and 14 rebounds, which tied Taylor Freemantle for the team lead. (Each girl had nine of L/W's 31 offensive rebounds.)

Lexi Becker contributed with 11 rebounds, three points and three steals, and Tosha Cloud finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

"We threw in some new things at practice last week for the girls to do in upcoming games and they seemed to work pretty well," Barthlow said. "We had some girls get in foul trouble early, but others just stepped right in and picked up where the others were."

Trout Lake/Glenwood 42, at Klickitat 38:

A nine-point first-quarter deficit proved to be too much for the Vandals to make up last Friday on the opening night of GCB play.

"TLG got off to an early in the first quarter and we would close the gap, then they would re-surge ahead , then we closed in and so on, but we never could bridge that early scoring drought."

The Eagle Mustangs opened the game with a 9-0 run and held the Vandals scoreless until Samantha Brewer made a goal with 2:39 left in the first quarter.

In the second stanza, TLG led by as many as 11 points (19-8). Klickitat rallied, however, behind the scoring of Brewer--who netted nine of 13 first-half points in the second quarter--to pull within 24-18 at halftime.

Third-quarter action saw TLG build its largest lead of the night at 32-20 before it settled for a 34-26 edge entering the last eight minutes.

The closest Klickitat got in the fourth quarter was four points on two occasions (40-36 and 42-38) as TLG held on, despite losing two starters to fouls in the first few minutes of the period and making just 4-of-17 free throws.

"It was a very competitive, very physical game where both teams really competed in loose-ball, open-court situations," Reed noted.

Katie Yarnell led the Eagle Mustangs with 15 points, Liz Vogt scored 10 and Veronica Glenn had nine.

For Klickitat, which converted just 7 of 19 at the foul line (0/7 in the first quarter and 2/2 in the second half), Brewer recorded 19 points and 14 rebounds, Charice McConville tallied nine points and Tia Spino made eight steals.
