Garden Art Focus Of June Show

Special talk part of garden tours

Art in the Garden opens at Columbia Center for the Arts on June 5 and extends through June 29.

The public is invited to attend the First Friday art reception from 6-8 p.m. on June 5.

Show Curators Sally Reichmuth and Susan Sutherland invite the public to stop by and delight in the Indoor Garden of artworks at the Columbia Art Gallery this month, where one'll find inspiration for garden landscape in the art of 12 featured artists who have created work especially for this show. Media include glass, metal, mosaic and ceramic, as well as paintings.

One will find bird feeders and fountains, magical mosaics, sculptural statements, and art that can punctuate your garden or create a garden aesthetic for your home...as well as some special botanical artworks which will delight your senses.

Show artists include: Arthur Higgins (sculpture), CJ Rench (sculpture), Linda Steider (glass), Dave Sherburne (fountains), Heather Marlow (botanicals and fiber art), Nancy Houfek (oils), Gene Phillips (ceramics), Jim Diem (ceramics), Toms Royal (mosaic), Sue Sutherland (monoprints), Tom Herrera (sculpture), Gylan Lane (botanicals).

A special talk will be featured in conjunction with the Art show; Marion McNew of Mt. Hood Gardening will be giving a lecture on "The Art of Garden Making."

An award-winning landscape designer, McNew will explore the inspiration of design in the garden. The lecture is open to the public and takes place at the Columbia Center for the Arts on Saturday, June 6, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The gallery is also one of seven featured stops on the Secret Garden Tour sponsored by the Central Gorge Master Gardener Association. The tour will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The decision to include the "Art in the Garden" show at the Columbia Center for the Arts is due to a heightened interest by gardeners of all abilities to feature art in their garden design.

The inclusion of the art show is another first for the Garden Tour and is an exciting addition for participants of the Secret Garden Tour.
