A nationwide scam is targeting classified ad customers and has been reported by customers in Oregon.
Scam artists call phone numbers listed within classified ads, according to sources at Eagle Newspapers. The caller claims to be calling from the newspaper's collection department. They ask the advertiser for credit card information to pay for a balance due.
As with any telephone scam, people who receive calls that claim to have legitimate need for personal and financial information should not give that information out. Such information can provide access to bank and credit card accounts that can then be used for telephone and online purchases.
Generally speaking, legitimate businesses do not call their customers in such a manner and ask for personal or financial information.
Advertising customers who receive such calls are urged to hang up and call the newspaper directly to verify that the information is needed.
