Oregon State Police troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing their investigation into last Friday morning's fatal traffic crash on U.S. 97 that resulted in the death of a 50-year old The Dalles-area man.
According to OSP Sgt. Julie Wilcox, on Dec. 10, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by the victim was southbound on U.S. 97, about 6 miles south of Biggs Junction, when the driver lost control on the icy roadway. The pickup crossed into the northbound lane where it collided into the front left corner of a 2007 Freightliner pulling a semi-trailer loaded with lumber products. After impact the pickup spun around, struck the semi-trailer and came to rest on the west side highway shoulder.
The commercial truck and trailer traveled across the southbound lane and slid along the guardrail before coming to a stop. The truck's driver, Andrew T. Collingwood, 43, of Homewood, Ill., escaped from the rig without injury before the truck and trailer burst into flames and burned.
The pickup's driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both drivers were using safety restraints.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Sherman County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Dept. of Transportation and Sherman County Fire Department.
The accident investigation kept U.S. 97 closed until noon.
