The Yakima Valley District’s Class 1B basketball championships tip off tomorrow afternoon in Sunnyside and, this being an even year, the district will send four teams (two boys, two girls) to the WIAA tournaments in Yakima.
Interest in these double-elimination tournaments will not be on who finishes first in the district, though, but on which teams secure the second-place berths.
Sunnyside Christian teams are favored to win both the boys and girls championships and the district’s No. 1 seeds in the state 1B brackets, which will be drawn on Feb. 21 at WIAA headquarters in Renton.
Contending for the No. 2 seed on the boys side are Trout Lake/Glenwood (8-12), runner-up to Sunnyside Christian (16-3) in this season’s Greater Columbia B League competition; Yakama Tribal (5-6) of Toppenish, and Klickitat (6-14).
On the girls side, the contenders (behind Sunnyside Christian, 15-4) for the second state berth are Trout Lake/Glenwood (13-6), Klickitat (9-11), and Bickleton (14-5).
