The White Salmon Valley School District's board of directors will be re-dedicating the Mid-Columbia Transportation Cooperative's bus maintenance and parking facility in honor of Sharon E. Schalk, the former longtime district transportation supervisor.
A re-dedication ceremony is planned for next Wednesday, May 19, at 6 p.m., at the bus maintenance and parking facility across from Wayne M. Henkle Middle School "in honor of Sharon and her many accomplishments [on behalf of] the industry, the community, and the students and staff" of White Salmon schools, an announcement reads.
Schalk, an Underwood resident and, last August, the first inductee of the Washington Pupil Transportation Association's hall of fame, retired late last year after a 34-year career with the school district. Schalk started out in August 1976 as a bus driver but four years later became the head of the transportation department.
The completion of the maintenance and parking center that now will bear her name was one of the many highlights of her long and steady tenure. (The voter-approved facility opened in August 2002 and was formally dedicated on Dec. 17, 2002.)
A reception at Henkle Middle School will follow the re-dedication.
