Soroptimist taking applications for annual awards

Deadline is Dec. 1

The Soroptimist International clubs of Mt. Adams and Hood River have pooled resources.

Together the two clubs are offering seven $1,000 Women's Opportunity Awards to Gorge women heads of households.

Applications are now available; they are due back by Dec. 1, 2010.

Women's Opportunity Awards provide financial assistance to women who have primary financial responsibility for their households, whether as single parents or married, who are seeking to further their education as a means to improve their lives.

The Women's Opportunity Award is not a scholarship; the funds can be used for any educational expenses, including tuition, childcare, transportation or textbooks.

The winners will be notified in December.

"These awards are real, local dollars helping real, local women," says Soroptimist Mt. Adams club project coordinator Vicki Prendergast, principal of Whitson Elementary School. "Some of the funds we've raised over the past year with the community's support are now available to women who are working to make a better life for themselves and their families."

Together, the Mt. Adams and the Hood River clubs sponsor "The Winter Gala" in January, an important fundraiser for the Women's Opportunity Awards.

"Our Soroptimist clubs raise funds locally so that we can help women in our communities, and generous support from our communities will fund seven awards this year," continued Prendergast.

To be eligible for the Soroptimist of Mt. Adams awards, applicants must be enrolled or accepted in a college or vocational school program. Two of the seven recipients will compete for a $3000 Soroptimist regional award in April 2011.

Applications are available online at, or at the Columbia Gorge Community College, Hood River Campus 1730 College Way, Hood River, or Whitson Elementary School in White Salmon.

Completed applications are due by Dec. 1, to: SIHR, PO Box 51, Hood River, OR 97031 or SIMA, PO Box 152, White Salmon, WA 98762. If you have questions please contact Susan Lovrin at 493-3528 or
