The White Salmon Valley School District's board of directors held its monthly business meeting last Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the Columbia High School library. A quorum of chairman Paul Mosbrucker and directors Debby Bergstrom, Jeff Cooper, Kris Kreps and Tom Stevenson was present.
During the meeting the directors heard a number of reports from Supt. Jerry Lewis and took action on a few agenda items.
District enrollment is still on the rise. For the current period, K-12 enrollment stood at 1,142.29 full-time equivalent students. That figure is 26.29 FTEs above the budgeted number of 1,116.
Instruction and Learning.
Dr. Lewis reported that the district administrative team is preparing a plan for introducing staff to a new district-wide instructional framework.
Noted Lewis, "The administrative team is working with a presenter who has experience with the selected framework, and with the Professional Learning Communities and how they can help a district develop a system-wide approach for improving instruction, learning, and for narrowing the achievement gap."
Lewis added that the administrative team also is reviewing assessment options; so far the team has reviewed the MAPS and Renaissance programs. "Getting accurate and timely assessment data is a critical component for helping teachers and PLC teams know where a student is in their individual learning and what is needed to help them make future progress," Lewis said.
The school district received notification that it did not meet the criteria to receive an Investment Grade Audit and State Energy Grant. Lewis, noted, however, that "if more money is offered by the state, we will be invited to apply again."
Stevenson moved, seconded by Cooper, that the district accept the resignations of Sam Steider as interdepartmental courier and Justin Cole as assistant wrestling coach at Wayne M. Henkle Middle School. Motion carried.
Stevenson moved to approve the following new hires: Jordan Olin and Emilio Salcedo as tutors in Hulan L. Whitson Elementary School's After-school Program; David Lambo and Devry Bell as assistant wrestling coaches at Columbia High; Larry McCutcheon as assistant wrestling coach at Henkle; Josh Brasuell as assistant boys basketball coach; Elizabeth Gintz as teacher on assignment in Henkle library; and Karen Strain, Jill Shelley and Jennifer Graves as teacher mentors at Henkle. Cooper seconded the motion, and it carried.
The board of directors will hold its next business meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 15, starting at 7 p.m., in the Henkle Middle School library
