OREGON

STATE POLICE

A Spokane man was arrested Sunday by Wasco County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) following an investigation related to an Oregon State Police (OSP) traffic stop during which the man's car knocked a trooper to the ground as he accelerated away after receiving a traffic citation.

The trooper was treated for minor injuries at an area hospital and released. WCSO conducted the investigation at OSP's request.

On Aug. 7, 2011, at approximately 1:17 p.m. OSP Trooper Mark Jubitz stopped a 2004 Ford Mustang displaying Washington license plates eastbound on Interstate 84 west of The Dalles near milepost 80 for traveling 85 mph in a 65 mph speed zone. The traffic stop took place in a wide gravel pullout on the shoulder well off the paved portion of the eastbound lanes.

Jubitz contacted the driver identified as Jacob John Melton, 31, Spokane. During the traffic stop, Jubitz was standing next to the passenger side window talking to Melton after just issuing him a traffic citation when Melton accelerated to leave. The car fishtailed on the gravel surface as Jubitz was standing next to it and knocked Jubitz to the ground.

Melton stopped and remained at the scene as Jubitz radioed for assistance.

Jubitz was transported by Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue ambulance to Mid-Columbia Medical Center with minor injuries. Jubitz, who has worked for OSP for over 4 years, was treated and released from the hospital.

Wasco County Sheriff's Sergeant Alan Birchfield conducted an investigation into the incident and arrested Melton for reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, attempted assault on a public safety officer.

Melton was lodged at the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility (NORCOR) in The Dalles.

MULTNOMAH COUNTY

DIVE TEAM

On Aug. 3, 2011 at about 5 p.m. the Multnomah County River Patrol was dispatched to a report of a vehicle in the Columbia River near the I-205 Bridge.

The vehicle, which appeared to have been in the water for several days, was in about four to five feet of water.

The roof of the Chrysler PT Cruiser was visible from the shore, a sure sign of lowering water levels.

The car was examined underwater by MCSO Dive Team members and found to be empty. Deputies discovered the Cruiser is a reported stolen vehicle from Portland registered out of Carson.

There is no other information available at this time.
