Summer reading sign-ups start June 1

Win prizes at library

Children and teens can have fun and earn prizes while keeping their reading skills sharp with free summer reading programs at the White Salmon Valley Community Library.

The summer reading programs run June 1 through the end of August, with sign-ups beginning June 1 and ending August 15.

All activities, events and prizes are free. All prizes must be claimed by Aug. 31.

New this year is a preschool-level "One World, Many Stories" summer reading program geared for children from birth through five years old.

Parents and caregivers can sign up their children for summer reading and receive an activity booklet, game board and event schedule for each month.

They can read to their children or do other activities with them to complete 25 steps on an early-learning game board for children up to three years, or a school-readiness game board for ages three to five years.

Completed game boards can be brought to the library and exchanged for prizes, with a limit of one prize per child per month. Parents also can enter their children in a grand-prize drawing held at each library. Grand prizes include one-year family memberships to the Portland Children's Museum, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Oregon Zoo, Discovery Center, Fort Dalles Museum, Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center, as well as Hood River Pool family punch cards.

Children ages six through 11 years by Aug. 31 can register to receive a school-age "One World, Many Stories" summer reading activity book, game board and monthly events schedule.

After completing the game board, participants can visit a branch or bookmobile to receive a prize for each completed board, with a limit of two prizes each month. They also can enter an end-of-summer grand-prize drawing for a $300 gift card for Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound. One grand prize will be awarded at each library.

For teens 12-19 years old by Aug. 31, the 2011 "You are HERE" program offers a $5 Barnes & Noble gift card for every 10 hours of reading recorded in a journal (up to four cards), or entry into a drawing for a grand prize.

Grand prizes include four Netbook computers, two Nintendo 3DS gaming systems, two $200 U.S. Savings Bonds, two $200 gift certificates, and two iPod Nanos. One grand prize will be awarded at each of 12 library locations (does not include North Bonneville or bookmobiles).
