Library's summer reading events start

For kids on June 17

So far, over 500 local children and teens have signed up for the White Salmon Valley Community Library's summer reading program.

Children or teens who haven't signed up yet, stop by the library to receive your game board (for ages 0-11) or reading journal (for ages 12-19). Prizes will be awarded for every completed game board and/or reading journal.

In addition to earning exciting prizes for reading activities, don't forget to join library staff most Fridays, starting June 17 and continuing through Aug. 19, for some great special programs for the whole family.

All programs will be held in the library's Sprint/Baker gallery unless otherwise noted. Here's the line-up:

June 17, 6 to 8 p.m. -- Summer Reading Kick-Off: Enjoy Nintendo Wii, LEGO Rock Band, board games, pizza, Bingo, button making, hat decorating and more.

June 24, 11 a.m. -- Tears of Joy Puppet Theater.

July 8, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. -- Creature Feature: Hands-on, educational presentation of live reptiles.

July 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- Super Science: Stop by anytime between 11 and 2 to enjoy hands-on science experiments and exploration stations including gooey slime, UV beads, magnet fun and more.

July 22, 11 a.m. -- Mad Science: Engaging, high-energy mad scientists spark imaginative learning.

July 29, 11 a.m. -- Steve Taylor: Magical ventriloquism.

Aug. 5, 11 a.m. -- Outside at Bingen Park: Arqueros Huichol, traditional Mexican dance. Bring your library card to check out books from the bookmobile!

Aug. 12, 11 a.m. -- Art Around the World: Be creative with hands-on art projects.

The public is also invited to help with the library's summer reading goal "Read Around the Library." Individuals who read a good book this summer are asked to stop by the library to add their handprint to the collection. If the handprints stretch around the entire library building before the end of the summer, library staff will celebrate with a free swim day at the White Salmon Pool, a free picnic in the park, and a special performance by fire dancers "Instruments of the Now."

The youngest of readers can enjoy a summer full of library storytimes!

Preschoolers age 3-6 are invited to "Kid's Club" with stories, songs, and action every Wednesday at 3 p.m. through Aug. 24. Toddler storytime, filled with stories, songs, puppets, and lots of movement happens Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:35 a.m. year-round.
