Time for Spring Fest

Editorial cartoon for May 26, 2011

Wow. It's late May already, and the annual White Salmon Spring Festival is coming up in just over a week.

The dates for this year's community celebration are June 3-5, and as is traditional, the festival will be centered around the city's Rhinegarten Park.

The Spring Festival is a wonderful event. We tend to take it for granted that in late May or early June the festival will blossom into life, but setting everything up every year represents a lot of dedication and hard work from the Spring Festival Committee, from many volunteers, and thanks to the generosity of numerous local businesses.

Most of all, the Spring Festival is a great deal of fun. The grand parade is always a highlight, as is the youth talent show on Friday evening. There is usually something for everyone, especially those interested in athletic competition. There will be a three-on-three basketball tournament, tennis tournaments, and walking and running events.

New this year will be a "Gorge Gear Swap," in which donated sporting goods and equipment will be sold. This event will be held in the Whitson Elementary School gym, with the money raised going to help students at Henkle Middle School.

There are many area businesses that provide assistance to help bring the Spring Festival to life, and some of them go "above and beyond" to help out. The primary event sponsors deserve to be recognized here: McCoy-Holliston Insurance, Sterling Savings Bank, Mid-Columbia Family Physicians, Pacific Rim Brokers, Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 188, NW Natural, Bergstrom Family Eyecare, Beneventi's Pizza, SDS Lumber Co., Postal Connections, Bingen Garbage Service, White Salmon-Bingen Rotary Club, CenterPointe Community Bank, Les Schwab Tires, and Harvest Market/Thriftway. Their bountiful support is deeply appreciated.

The Spring Festival is a wonderful community event all the way around, and we can only hope for some sunny weather to make the weekend complete. Hope you all turn out for the celebration!
