Soroptimists Women's Award Applications Now Being Accepted

Deadline is Dec. 1

The Soroptimist International clubs of Mt. Adams and Hood River are offering seven $1,000 Women's Opportunity Awards to Gorge women heads of households.

Applications are now available and are due by Dec. 1.

Women's Opportunity Awards provide financial assistance to women who have primary financial responsibility for their households, whether as single parents or married, who are seeking to further their education as a means to improve their lives.

To be eligible for the award, applicants must be enrolled or accepted in a college or vocational school program. The award can be used for any educational expenses, including tuition, childcare, transportation or textbooks. The recipients will be notified in December.

Two of the seven recipients will compete for a $3000 Soroptimist regional award in April 2012.

"These awards are real, local dollars helping real, local women," says Soroptimist Mt. Adams club project coordinator Susan Lovrin. "Some of the funds we've raised over the past year with the community's support are now available to women who are working to make a better life for themselves and their families."

Together, the Mt. Adams and the Hood River clubs sponsor "The Winter Gala" in January, an important fundraiser for the Women's Opportunity Awards.

"Our Soroptimist clubs raise funds locally so that we can help women in our communities, and generous support from our communities will fund seven awards this year," continued Lovrin.
