The Skamania Klickitat Community Network (SKCN) has recently been awarded a $2,000 grant from Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railway Foundation.
The funds will be used to expand information for parents and community members on the life-long health effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). These include severe child abuse and neglect, abandonment, witnessing domestic violence, death or incarceration of a parent, parental depression and substance abuse.
Skamania Klickitat Community Network is one of 42 Community Health and Safety Networks associated with the Washington State Family Policy Council. Together they work across Washington State in both urban and rural communities to reduce these negative behaviors that can lead to damaging health problems in individuals exposed to them as a child.
Obesity, heart attacks, high blood pressure, strokes, learning disorders, diabetes, migraines and other chronic public health problems have been linked to toxic stress associated with ACEs.
SKCN dedicates resources to offering parenting information and support to rural families throughout Skamania and Klickitat County. It sponsors parenting classes and workshops; maintains a lending library, community-list serve and parenting website; publishes and distributes a monthly parenting newsletter, and partners with other community groups to maximize reach and effectiveness.
