Summer reading at the library starts June 1

For children and teens

Children and teens can have fun and earn prizes while keeping their reading skills sharp with free summer reading programs at the White Salmon Valley Community Library.

The summer reading programs run June 1 through the end of August, with sign-ups beginning June 1 and ending Aug. 15.

All activities, events and prizes are free. All prizes must be claimed by Aug. 31.

The 2012 theme for children's summer reading programs is "Dream Big -- READ!"

Continuing for the second year is a preschool-level program geared for children from birth through five years old. Parents and caregivers can sign up their children for summer reading and receive a bookmark, a game board and a summer-fun calendar. They can read to their children or do other activities with them to complete 15 steps on an early-learning game board for children up to three years, or a school-readiness game board for ages three to five years.

Completed game boards are then brought to the library and exchanged for prizes. Parents also can enter their children in a grand-prize drawing held at each library.

Grand prizes include one-year family memberships to the Portland Children's Museum, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), or the Oregon Zoo.

Children ages six through 11 years by Aug. 31 can register to receive a bookmark, a game board and a summer-fun calendar. After completing 10 squares on the game board, participants can visit the library to receive a prize for each completed board. They also can enter an end-of-summer grand-prize drawing for a $300 gift card toward a stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound. One grand prize will be awarded at each library in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.

For teens 12-19 years old by Aug. 31, the 2012 "Own the Night" program offers a $5 Barnes & Noble gift card for every 10 hours of reading recorded in a journal (limited to the first four journals), or entry into a drawing for a grand prize. The fifth and subsequent returned journals will all have a chance to enter into the grand prize drawing. Grand prizes include a Kindle Fire, $200 Barnes & Noble gift card, $200 gift card, or a Nook Tablet. One grand prize will be awarded at each of 12 library locations.

The library also has many exciting summer reading events happening most Friday mornings at 11 a.m. All events are in the library's Sprint/Baker Gallery unless noted.
