The equinox has passed and we are officially in autumn. Though the days have been warm, the chill in the evening is undeniable. As we steer towards hunkering down for the colder part of the year, let us get back to community. I find that when the days are short, and the nights long, being active with other Trout Lakers keeps me from feeling stir crazy. The wind and rain and snow may feel far away, but they are around the corner, and getting active now will help the momentum through the winter. From canning together, to book clubs and sewing groups, to local committees, finding a common love to share is the place to start. Many of these groups already exist, so ask a friend or remind your group from whom you have strayed over the summer months that you should start to gather once more.

If you are looking for a new project here is one that might appeal: Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the next Trout Lake Community Council Meeting, Ray Thygesen will be giving a presentation about a potential Supplemental Living Center for the ill and elderly who wish to remain at home or close by for as long as possible. Community members are strongly encouraged to attend so that the dialogue on this proposal can continue and a steering committee of 7-9 people can be formed. This is a project that needs community feedback in order to proceed. Please consider attended to hear more about it and hopefully get involved. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Trout Lake School.

Now that the summer social season is at an end, and before the holidays are upon us, take some time to take care of yourself. Oct. 12 and 13 is Skyline's Body and Soul Symposium. Great news for women without insurance. Skyline is offering $100 discount on mammograms at the symposium with its new digital mammography machine. Cost for the mammogram is $150 (cash only) and it is intended for women without insurance. All women who schedule appointments during the symposium, or who make an appointment at Body & Soul for a future date, will be given a free gift and a gift certificate for a complimentary manicure or pedicure. Space is limited. Contact the hospital for an appointment or go online at
