It is with great disappointment that the Help Us Grow Safely (H.U.G.S.) children's health and safety fair committee announces there will be no HUGS Fair for the 2013 year.
"The H.U.G.S. fair has been held for 17 years," said Susan Kerr, WSU-Klickitat County extension director and member of the H.U.G.S. Fair Committee. "H.U.G.S. has always had a shoestring budget and skeleton crew of volunteer organizers, but this year a decrease in sponsoring agencies has limited capacity to the point there is not the 'critical mass' available to make H.U.G.S. happen."
In the past, the annual H.U.G.S. fair has been attended by 400 to 800 children and family members and been well supported by the public, education and service agencies from the community and region, as well as local businesses.
"If more institutions or individuals come forward to assist with volunteer efforts and organization, we hope we can revive the H.U.G.S. fair in 2014," Kerr said.
