Enjoy a good read, discussion, and meeting others in the community, the White Salmon Valley Community Library invites the public to take part in the library's 2013 monthly book discussion series.
The discussions are scheduled for the third Wednesday of the month February through May. Copies of the first title in the spring series, The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai, are now available for participants to pick up at the library's front desk.
The book will be discussed on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. in the library's Sprint/Baker Gallery.
The first title of the spring series, The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai, winner of both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Man Booker Prize, takes place ..."in a crumbling insolated house at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas...[where] an embittered judge who wants only to retire in peace...[is joined by] his orphaned granddaughter, Sai…. The judge's cook watches over her distractedly, for his thoughts are often on his son, Biju, who is hop scotching from one gritty New York Restaurant to another.
Desai's brilliant novel, published to huge acclaim, is a story of joy and despair. Her characters face numerous choices that majestically illuminate the consequences of colonialism as it collides with the modern world.
The spring 2013 book discussion series will continue monthly through May. Other titles in the series and the dates they will be discussed are:
The Submission by Amy Waldman on March 20
West of Here: A Novel by Jonathan Evison on April 17
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Stayed on May 15.
