Columbia girls jayvee claims Trico League co-championship

A 44-21 victory over La Center here Feb. 4 earned the Columbia High girls junior varsity basketball team a share of the 2013-14 Trico League championship.

The Junior Bruins finished in a tie with Woodland. Each team ended the season with two losses and each team won its home game in head-to-head competition.

“This is the fourth consecutive year that the jayvee girls have finished the season either first or second in the Trico League,” Jr. Bruins Coach Don Struck noted.

Struck attributed the team’s success to “a smothering full-court defense and an offense that uses a lot of mo-tion, with all 11 players getting extensive playing time in most games throughout the season.”

Claire Anderson scored 14 points (on 7/13 shooting) and gathered five rebounds to lead the Bruins in their game against La Center. Mallory Doty tallied 12 points and three steals. Aidan Liddiard pitched in eight assists and four steals.

For the season, Anderson led the team in scoring (11.85 ppg) while shooting 46 percent from the field, and was first in blocked shots (29) and second in rebounding (6.54 rpg).

Doty paced the Junior Bru-ins in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and averaged 4.64 ppg, which was good for third on the team.

Lauren Thiesies was second in scoring (6.14 ppg) and first in steals (51). Liddiard finished fourth in scoring (4.14 ppg), third in rebounding (3.57 rpg), second in steals (42, or 3.0 spg), and first in assists (29, or 2.07 apg).

Teamwise, the Jr. Bruins averaged 41.6 ppg and al-lowed 23.4 ppg in 14 games.
