Kenneth K. (Ken) Presler Jr., 50, of Vancouver, passed away Aug. 6, 2014, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Vancouver to Ken Presler Sr. and Darlene Presler. He graduated from Evergreen High School in 1982. While in high school he was active in choir and musical productions.
Following high school, he worked at various jobs before becoming manager of Skoochie’s, one of the first under 21 clubs in Portland. During this time he met movie producer and director Gus Van Sant and had a role in the Van Sant movie Mala Noche’. Ken also briefly lived in Trout Lake and worked as a timber faller before moving back to the Portland/Vancouver area. He was a skilled body and fender man and worked for various businesses, most recently Hanna Motors.
While working in Portland, Ken met the love of his life, Sarah Strawn. They were married in 1995 and had one child, Elliot Presler. Ken was a very outgoing, friendly man with a wonderful sense of humor, dearly loved by his family and his many friends.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He especially enjoyed hunting elk and deer with his dad, brothers, nephews, and niece. He also loved to fish and made several trips to southeast Alaska to fish with his Presler family. He enjoyed teaching his young nieces and nephews how to fish. As a child, Ken and his family belonged to the Columbia Roadrunners jeep club and enjoyed riding in Ken Sr.’s jeep, “Whiplash.” Later Ken Jr. purchased his own jeep, which he named “Whiplash Jr.” One of his fondest memories was of taking his cousins riding on back roads in his jeep with the top off.
Ken was devoted to his very large extended family of Preslers, Marshalls, Nidays, and Strawns, and one of his favorite times of the year was always the first weekend in August, when he and his family enjoyed a large family reunion in Trout Lake. He often joined his cousins and friends around the campfire in the evenings to play his guitar and sing. The weekend after the Trout Lake gathering, he always looked forward to the Strawn family gathering on Mt. Hood. Ken and Sarah started the annual Presler Palooza tradition at their home in Vancouver several years ago, a fun July weekend with friends and family, enjoying visiting, sharing good food, and playing music all weekend.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Sarah Strawn Presler, son Elliot Presler, parents Ken and Darlene Presler of Trout Lake, brother Jim Presler and his wife Kerrie of Moses Lake, brother Joe Presler and his wife Jodene of Monmouth, Ore., father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Constance Strawn of Portland, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Martha Strawn Morris and Sloane Morris of Portland, his beloved nieces and nephews, Jason Telles, Jimmy, Christopher, and Megan Presler, Brady Anderson, Chandler and Gavin Pulse, Jared, Jordan, Jeffree, and Jenna Presler, and Sofia and Jackson Morris. He is also survived by his many uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ben and Betty Marshall of Trout Lake and Fred and Eva Presler of Vancouver.
Whether he is remembered as Junior, Homer, Kenny, or Ken, he will always be remembered as a loving, kind, tolerant, gentle man and will be greatly missed by all his family and all the many friends he made in his lifetime.
