William “Bill” Henry Simmons, born Jan. 02, 1936, in Harrah, son of the late Lloyd and Mary Simmons, passed away on June 11, 2014, in his White Salmon home at the age of 78.
He is survived by his daughter and her spouse, Raelene and Bruce Steinbach; grandchildren Darren Steinbach, Leslie Benton and her spouse Jamie Benton, siblings and their spouses David and Sharon Simmons, Joyce Jaksha, Deloris and Leonard Conklin and Donna Bartley.
Bill and his family came to White Salmon, in 1947 where he graduated from White Salmon High School in 1954. Before his senior year of high school Bill enlisted into the Army National Guard in 1953. He became a member of the Merchant Marines working tug boats on the Columbia River until 1954 when he enlisted into the United States Army Reserve where he spent some time stationed in Oakland, Calif., and Yakima, until 1961.
After his service Bill continued his career on the water captaining ocean going sea vessels all over the world until he retired at age 57.
He loved sharing stories of his travels to places such as Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong and Dubai. Bill was passionate about traveling even after retirement taking long road trips all over the United States.
Bill lived a full and adventurous life, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
