Dorothy “Reverend” Lee Franklin

The Reverend Dorothy Lee Franklin passed from this life after a period of declining health in Hood River, Ore., on May 31, 2018. Dorothy was born in Camas on Jan. 26, 1934, to Milton J. and Bettie Boone Ewing Franklin.
She graduated from Camas High School in 1952 with highest honors, and received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture (horticulture) from the State College of Washington (now Washington State University) in 1956, a master of science degree in dairy chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1966, and a master of divinity from Interfaith Metropolitan Theological Education in Washington, DC, in 1977. She was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in the United States, Sept. 10, 1977, by the National Capital Presbytery in Washington, DC.
Dorothy served as chaplain at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, for a decade, following which she served congregations in upstate New York until 1997 when she returned to the Northwest as the interim pastor at Cherry Park Presbyterian Church in Troutdale, Ore. At the conclusion of this assignment in September 1999, she received honorably retired status by the Presbytery of the Cascades. In retirement, Dorothy was called to serve as interim pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Lakeview, Ore., for nearly two years.
In 2006, she became the temporary supply pastor for the Trout Lake Presbyterian Church, as well as the Evergreen Church in Cook. She served in Cook on a temporary basis, but continued and concluded her ministry at Trout Lake in 2013.
She is survived by her sister, Virginia Franklin Campbell, and her brother-in-law, Verne D. Campbell, residents of Colorado Springs, Colo., several cousins from both the Ewing and Franklin families, lifelong friends and extended family members, as well as all the people who loved and treasured her as she ministered to them during her thirty-six-year ministry.
A memorial service and reception celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held on Aug. 11, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Riverside Community Church in Hood River, Ore., and her ashes will be spread at Government Mineral Springs, Carson, a site cherished by Dorothy throughout her life.
