Dan L. Howard passed away peacefully Dec. 13, 2018, at the home he built, in the bed he made, surrounded by his family. Donita Brownlee RN and Steve McLennan MD with Heart of Hospice were a great comfort during this time.
Dan was born July 28, 1946, in Murray, Utah. He was a self-made man who, after graduating in civil engineering from the University of Utah, moved to Portland, Ore., where he owned several successful businesses and achieved his P.E. (Professional Engineer) license. He was a board member of the Boys and Girls Club.
While at a favorite Portland bluegrass band performance he met his wife of 37 years, Diane Stangel.
Dan remodeled their Portland house before building their White Salmon area home. Dan also built a woodworking shop where he crafted many of the furnishings and interior finishes for their home.
He enjoyed working alongside his son Eric (who died in 2011) on many projects which included an elaborate screened in porch designed and engineered by Dan.
Motorsports were his passion. While in Utah, he raced his Triumph in many local sports car competitions earning several trophies. He enjoyed motorcycle adventures, lacrosse, winter sports, travel, cruising the San Juan Islands, and his much-loved canine buddy, Abby.
His family is forever grateful to Katy Powell and Teresa Grove for their sensitive, caring assistance and support.
