Elizabeth Irene Moore Kight passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family in Oregon City, Ore., on Dec. 11, 2018, at the age of 99 years. She was the last of her 10 siblings to pass.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Jean Garrett, and Peggy Jo Vermaas; her grandchildren, Adrian Garcia (husband Samuel Garcia) and Patrick Vermaas (wife Megan Vermaas); and her great-grandchildren, Isabel Garcia, Gabriel Garcia, Valorie Vermaas and Heidi Vermaas. Her son, Stan Kight, and her husband, Pat Kight, preceded her in death.
She was born on Oct. 17, 1919, in the Okanogan area in Washington State. She was the ninth of 10 children born to John Newton Moore and Emma Lena Cook Moore. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Sunnyside and began a life of farming.
She was an excellent student and graduated from Sunnyside high school at the age of 16 years. She first attended college at Santa Rosa Junior College and later graduated with honors from Washington State University with a bachelor’s degree in home economics.
Soon into her teaching career, she accepted a teaching position in White Salmon. There she met Glen Dale (Pat)Knight. They married on June 2, 1946, and had a wonderful life together for 47 years. After she retired from teaching and Pat retired from Broughton’s Lumber Mill, they enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends.
After Pat’s death in 1993, she moved to Portland, Ore., and began to reside with her daughter and grandchildren. In 2016, the whole family moved to Oregon City and resided together. She had a very full and happy life.
To celebrate her life, the family is hosting two open houses at the family home in Oregon City on Saturday, Jan. 12 and 19 from noon to 4 p.m. Due to some limitations with parking, please call and let us know if you are planning to attend.
