Eugene Lloyd Smith, known to all as “Smitty” passed away in The Dalles, Ore., on April 29, 2018, at the age of 89. He was born in Browning, Mo., to Frank and Mary Susan (Crane) Smith on July 11, 1928.
Smitty spent his childhood in Missouri and on Aug. 22, 1949, he married Dorthy Julia Zimmerman in Bloomfield. The couple moved to the Northwest in 1952 where Smitty worked building dams. He was the first person to pour concrete at the Rock Reach Dam in Wenatchee and built the walkways on top of The Dalles Dam.
After working on dams, Smitty became a farmer, which he truly loved. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, visiting with people and of course, farming.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Dorthy Smith of Lyle; daughters Lorena Sue Rhodes of Pendleton, Ore., Eugenia Elaine Allen of Goldendale, Charlotte Gail Landry of Lyle and Cindy Mae Brabender of Murdock; son Lloyd Dean Smith of Bingen; and many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters, two grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
A funeral service was held at Gardner Funeral Home on May 4, 2018, with interment at Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
