On Saturday, April 24, at 2 p.m., Maryhill Museum of Art will present a lecture by Lewis and Clark historian and Emmy award winning cinematographer Rex Ziak followed by a hike.

Ziak will discuss his book, In Full View, written about the Corps of Discovery's month-long search for a winter camp at the mouth of the Columbia, and the flora and fauna they encountered along the way.

As a nationally recognized authority on Lewis and Clark's arrival at the Pacific, Ziak is an engaging storyteller, said Colleen Schafroth, executive director of Maryhill Museum.

Copies of his book will be available for purchase, and he will be pleased to sign them.

Visitors will also be able to view Lewis & Clark At Maryhill, an exhibit curated by Ziak and Mary Schlick which features original Native American artifacts comparable to those Lewis & Clark collected and documented while in the Columbia River Gorge along with quotes from the Corps of Discovery journals describing such objects.

"Maryhill's vast collection of Native American objects made it possible for us to pull together a wonderful exhibit illustrating the fullness of Native American culture at the time the Corps traded with tribes in the region," said Schafroth.

"This stretch of the Columbia River served as the Wall Street of the Northwest," said Ziak.

The museum also has a Lewis and Clark Overlook located on a promontory on the southeast side of its gardens. It includes interpretive panels that share observations written by Clark when the Corps of Discovery traveled through the area.

At 3:30 p.m., Schafroth will lead a moderate 30-minute hike from the Overlook to view several sites the Corps documented while in the area.

"On April 22, 1806, the Corps walked across the land where the museum now sits, said Schafroth. "To honor that event, the Museum presents a related program each year and this lecture and hike continue that tradition."

The walk will include references to pertinent excerpts from the Corps journals. Participants should wear appropriate shoes and pants.
